Join us at Metrograph, one of New York City’s most iconic independent cinemas, for an evening celebrating the programming language that helped shape modern computing.
Â
The evening will begin with a screening of C++: The Documentary, followed by a panel discussion with engineers and leaders from the C++ community. Panelists will explore the past, present, and future of C++, discussing its impact on modern systems and why it continues to power performance-critical software across industries.
Seating is limited and RSVP is required.Â
C++: The Documentary tells the story of one of the most influential programming languages ever created. From its beginnings at Bell Labs in 1979 to its role powering modern computing infrastructure, the film traces how C++ evolved and why it continues to matter today.
Â
Through interviews with language creators, standards contributors, and engineers across industries, the documentary explores the design philosophy behind C++, the challenges of maintaining a language used by millions of developers, and the systems it enables—from game engines and particle physics to financial infrastructure.
Matt Godbolt is a software engineer at HRT, where he works on performance-critical systems built in C++ that power the firm’s trading infrastructure. He is also the creator of Compiler Explorer, a widely used tool that allows developers to see how their code compiles across different architectures. Since launching in 2012, Compiler Explorer has become a staple resource for language enthusiasts exploring the behavior and performance of compiled code.
Bjarne Stroustrup is the designer and original implementer of C++ and the author of several foundational books on the language, including The C++ Programming Language. Dr. Stroustrup is a Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University, a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and a recipient of the Charles Stark Draper Prize, the IEEE Computer Society's Computer Pioneer Award, and the IET Faraday Medal.
Herb Sutter is an industry expert on C++ and designer or co-designer of various ISO C++ language and library features. He served as chair of the ISO C++ standards committee from 2002 to 2025, and serves as the chair of the Standard C++ Foundation since 2012. After 22 years at Microsoft, Herb is now a Technical Fellow at Citadel Securities where he works on active adoption of the latest C++ language and its ecosystem.
Eric Lubin is a software engineer at HRT, where he leads the engineering teams responsible for much of the C++ infrastructure used in the live trading environment. His work focuses on building foundational low-latency systems and high-throughput platforms that process massive volumes of market data in real time, efficiently deliver this data to trading strategies, and send resulting orders to global markets.
Gabriel Dos Reis is a Principal Software Design Engineer and Software Architect at Microsoft and a long-standing contributor to the ISO C++ Standards Committee (WG21), where he has been a driving force behind landmark features of modern C++, including Concepts, Modules, and compile-time computation. Dr. Dos Reis holds a Ph.D. from Université Paris VII and has served as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at Texas A&M University.
Nina Dinka Ranns is an independent C++ consultant and long-time contributor to the ISO C++ standardization committee, where she has participated since 2013 and currently serves as vice convener. Throughout her career, she has worked on systems ranging from telecommunications infrastructure to cloud-based security products, with roles at Siemens, Motorola, DataSift, and Symantec, and consulting work with EDG, Qt Group, and Bloomberg focused on compiler technology and library design.
Yes! The documentary will premiere in person first, and will be released publicly on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/@cultrepo) shortly after. Follow Cult.Repo for more info on release dates.
Hudson River Trading (HRT) is a quantitative trading firm where engineers build and optimize performance-critical systems that power global trading. At HRT, C++ plays a central role in building systems that operate close to hardware limits, where latency, reliability, and careful systems design are critical. HRT engineers work deep in OS internals, CPU architecture, and networking to solve hard systems problems at scale, and they’re always looking for talented C++ and Python developers to join the team.

Cult.Repo makes documentaries about the technologies that shape the world — and the people who built them. Since 2018, Cult.Repo has told the stories behind React, Node.js, Python, Kubernetes, and now C++, bringing the open source community to the screen.
